Hands-On Massage Experience Requirement

To enrol on to the Level 5 Diploma in Soft Tissue Therapy, students need to show that they have some prior experience giving hands-on massage. It is important that everyone starts the course with the basic hands-on-massage skills in place.

If you cannot show that you have some hands-on massage experience, you’ll need to complete our Introductory Massage Course before starting the Diploma. This is a fully hands-on, two-day weekend workshop designed for beginners. It teaches all the primary massage techniques to all appropriate areas of the body and provides the practical foundation needed to progress onto the Diploma.

Students without prior hands-on massage experience, regardless of existing qualifications, must complete the Introductory Course before starting the Diploma.

You’re welcome to book both the Introductory Course and the Diploma at the same time, if you wish.

Upgrade to Soft Tissue Therapy, BTEC Level 5

Applications are invited from qualified therapists with any of the following:

  • Level 3 Massage qualification plus 2 years, or 400 clinical hours of experience*.
  • Level 4 Massage qualification plus 1 year, or 200 clinical hours of experience*.
  • Degree qualification which included a massage module plus 1 year, or 200 clinical hours of experience*.
  • Or equivalent training and experience*.

*Clinical experience is evaluated through information provided in the application process.

The course covers all the advanced Soft Tissue Therapy assessment and treatment techniques from our well established BTEC Level 5 Soft Tissue Therapy qualification. This includes our latest developments in evidence-based principles and the Biopsychosocial model of pain and person centred care.

1day +9 weekend workshops spread over approximately 8 months. Between the classroom sessions there are 3 written assignments and 3 Case Studies to complete as well as a theory and practical exam at the end.

The course is specially designed as a part-time course for working therapists and the written assignments are a very important and integral part of the learning process. We expect the average student will need to spend about 3-4 hours per week doing home study, in addition to the practice they get treating their clients. Although we set hand-in dates for the assignments, we appreciate that it is not always possible to complete them in time.  We allow extra time because we want the assignments done well rather than rushed. We will allow up to one year to complete all the assignments.
